USDA Awards Munson TeleHealth Network $106,211 This money will be used to purchase equipment to upgrade network Munson Helathcare's REMEC TeleHealth Network wil be receiving $106,211 from the federal government. The United States Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Rural Development, Thomas Dorr, recently announced the award as part of $25.8 million in grants to 1003 Distance Learning and Telemedicine programs across the country. "This program connects communities to medical services and educational opportunities they would not otherwise have," Dorr said. "Our focus is to ensure that all rural Americans have access to state-of-the-art services through our rapidly expanding telecommunications system." Randi Oehlers, director of Mundaon Healthcare's REMEC TeleHealth Network, said the grant comes as the network is upgrading a cvideo bridge that links various hospital and clinic locations around northern Michigan. "We're excited and pleased to be receiving the grant." Oehlers said. "It's a credit to our REMEC staff who work hard to provide quality health care programming and connect northern Michigan patients with physician specialists. This grant will help us with the purchase of updated equipment." The REMEC TeleHealth Network connects 11 hospitals and clinic sites across northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. It offers continuing medical education for health care professionals, video conferengin, and physician-patient telemedicine links. REMEC broadcasts about 1,400 programs and offers 4,000 hours of programming each year.
